Degree Structure
To earn a B.A. in mass communication, you have to finish 45 courses in four
academic years. Your freshman year will be a combination of introductory courses
in Mass Communication, news reporting, photojournalism, computer and English in
addition to your selection of electives (Music, sociology, psychology, Arabic. …etc.)
To declare a major in mass communication, you have to pass a typing test (20
words/minute) during your first year at MIU. Then you can choose between three basic
specializations:
Integrated Marketing Communication.
Radio and Television.
Print and Electronic Journalism.
Integrated Marketing Communication
This specialization is designed to produce skilled graduates who show knowledge
and application capabilities. It is a new and modern concept in marketing that aims
at combining all promotion efforts to ensure effective marketing of goods, services
and ideas. You will gain an appreciation of planning campaigns, executing advertisements
for print & Electronic media and organizing public relations events.
Year Two
You are introduced to the basics and fundamentals of integrated marketing communication
with special emphasis on advertising and Public Relations. Advertising design courses
will be an integral part of your first year.
Year Three
In this year, you learn specific skills of research for marketing and advertising
purposes. You take specific copywriting courses in addition to writing for print
& electronic media. Campaign strategies and design are core subjects at this
stage. Applying the key concepts of Marketing, you will be required to produce radio,
TV and print media advertisements.
Year Four
This is the year of practical courses, in which you will apply all what you have
learned in the execution of real campaigns, based on real research, with actual
execution of print & electronic advertisements. You will also prepare promotional
material and plan Public Relations events as part of your campaign. Professional
consultants pay regular visits to your classes to offer professional guidance and
to evaluate your progress, because an external committee of academics and practitioners
will arbitrate your final project.

Radio & Television
The growing media institutions in Egypt and the Arab world currently demand this
field of study. The design of this program highly responds to the current innovations
in information technology. The specialization is designed to produce qualified media
professionals supported by multimedia skill and non-linear production capabilities.
Year Two
You are introduced to the key concepts and tools in radio and television, with emphasis
on writing for different media. You will also be introduced to multimedia and on-line
basic tools and software: Flash and Dreamweaver, which you will use later on in
practical courses.
Year Three
In this year, you will take TV production courses, Radio drama and advanced scriptwriting.
You will also take courses covering a wide range of broadcast programs like news
programs, talk shows and radio programs. You will also be studying Adobe Premier
and After Effects software in the multimedia labs.
Year Four
This year, you apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired by undertaking a
group project. You will choose a theme, on which you are going to apply research,
scriptwriting, camera shooting, and editing using final cut software in Apple Macintosh’s
labs. Professional experts throughout the year will guide you and an external committee
of academics & practitioners will arbitrate your project.

Print & Electronic Journalism
This program is designed to meet the developments in modern mass media. Media companies
need graduates that combine knowledge and skills of print and electronic media.
Our faculty is a pioneer in the Middle East to offer this sequence that qualifies
the students to work as professional correspondents and reporters for the different
media. This specialization is skill-oriented and depends on application more than
theory.
Year Two
You are introduced to the key rules of writing for various media, which you will
use later in the program. You learn basic design concepts as well as photojournalism
rules and applications.
Year Three
In this year, you learn how to write news for newspapers, magazines, radio and television
as well as the Internet sites. You apply basic research methods to an actual advanced
journalism research. You produce live news and documentary reports. You also learn
multimedia techniques to produce electronic news reports.
Year Four
This year, you apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired by undertaking individual
projects in on-line journalism or magazine production (writing, layout and design).
You present the projects to a committee of professional journalists and experts.
